Fabric IQ Proof of Concept

Context

Under a Microsoft co-investment initiative, the institution engaged a delivery partner to build a Fabric IQ proof of concept: a Copilot-based conversational query experience over selected semantic models in the governed Microsoft Fabric environment. It is funded through a Microsoft offer with a fixed cap, paid by Microsoft directly to the partner, contingent on the agreed scope being delivered within that cap.

My part

I worked the scoping and contracting stages. I selected and scoped the dashboard cluster for the pilot, prioritising interrelated, staff-facing datasets over narrower options, reasoning from what a lecturer actually needs to query day to day so the pilot would be practically relevant. I also drafted the statement of work itself, turning internal meeting outcomes and a vendor call into a structured scope document before it was finalised with the partner.

The scope

The finished statement of work frames the engagement around four workstreams: mobilisation and readiness, workspace and semantic-model selection, Fabric IQ configuration and validation, and delivery with handover and scale-up recommendations. It deliberately excludes dashboard migration, large semantic-model redevelopment, and production rollout, keeping it a bounded, decision-supporting pilot on an eight-week plan. The end goal is a working Copilot query experience that extends the institution's existing SQL and Genie query interfaces with natural-language querying through Microsoft Copilot. The pilot is at the mobilisation stage, scoped and about to begin.
